Catching insects is a great way for kids to learn about different types of bugs, and see what bugs are native to the area they live in. A simple bug trap will catch bugs safely so kids can look at them and then let them go. This bug trap is easy to make, and overnight you'll have a ton of insects for your kids to identify.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Trowel
  • Glass mason jar
  • Rocks, blocks, and/or logs
  • Board
  1. Step 1

Find a shady place that seems to attract the most bugs in your yard. Shady areas around bushes and rocks, or where the soil is thick, are good locations.

  2. Step 2

Dig a hole the size of a glass mason jar. The lid of the jar should be even with the ground. Measure the jar first, or dig a little out of the hole at a time and keep checking until the jar fits inside.

  3. Step 3

Place some rocks, cement blocks or small pieces of wood around the jar to create a square. Place a board on top of these so it shades the jar but doesn't actually touch the lid. This is to keep rain and other animals out.

  4. Step 4

Leave the jar in the ground over night. In the morning lift the board and pull the jar out of the hole. Bugs that have fallen in and become trapped will be crawling around in your jar and you can keep them in a bug box or set them free.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't forget to feed the insects you keep! Visit your local library for a book about bugs and how to care for them.
