Diabetes isipidus is a disorder that causes individuals to be extremely thirsty much of the time, and to also excrete excessive amounts of urine. This disorder may occur when the body is unable to regulate the need for fluids and the excretion of fluids from the body. This disorder may occur when the body is unable produce, release or store ADH (anti-diurectic hormone). It may also occur when the kidneys are unable to react properly to ADH. This condition is completely unrelated to diabetes mellutis (sugar diabetes).

Take medications as prescribed by a physician. The synthetic version of the desmopressin (ADH) hormone may be needed to help the body properly regulate body fluids. This medication will only help if the condition is caused by a hormone problem. Some individuals may be given a prescription for hydrochlorothiazide, which is a diurectic. However, in individuals with diabetes insipidus, it may have the opposite effect.

When taking desmopressin medications, drink fluids only when thirsty for the medication to be the most effective.

Consume less salt if the kidneys are unable to properly respond to ADH. A low-salt diet inhibits the kidneys from making too much urine.

Determine if any current medications may be causing diabetes insipidus. In some cases, the medications can be changed. However, no one should stop taking any medications unless told to by a doctor.

Drink adequate amounts of water. Since the body may be ridding the body of too much fluid, the risk of dehydration is increased. Consult a doctor if you are unsure of exactly how much water you should consume on a daily basis.
