Repairing ball divots on the golf course is an important part of the game. It is not only a courtesy to the golf course, but it helps everyone who is on the putting green after your foursome. An golf divot that is not repaired can take 2 to 4 more weeks to recover than a divot that has been fixed.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stick the two prongs of the divot repair tool into the ground on the outside of the ball mark, at approximately a 45-degree angle.

  2. Step 2

Push the turf toward the middle of the divot. Do not push down and break the roots of the grass; that can cause more damage to the green, because it kills the grass.

  3. Step 3

Move to another side of the divot and repeat Step 2. Repeat until you have worked all of the grass back to the middle of the divot.

  4. Step 4

Once you have pushed all the grass to the middle of the divot using your divot tool, you can then pat it down flat with your putter head. This evens the divot with the rest of the green so the putting surface is smooth.

  5. Step 5

Step up and make your putt.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is fine to repair more than just your divot on the green. Your fellow golfers will benefit from your good work.
  • You cannot repair spike marks in your line of putt without incurring a penalty.
