How to Remove Printer Ink

Changing a printer's ink cartridge is a simple task. Modern printers have streamlined this process to such a degree that it is nearly as easy as filling your cup of coffee in the morning. Gone are the days when you had to tug or pull and risk spilling the ink all over yourself in the process. The following instructions are about how to remove an ink cartridge from an HP PSC 1610 Printer Scanner Copier. Most other printers have similar steps in removing their ink cartridges.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure that your printer is plugged in and turned on. It is possible to damage your printer hardware by forcing things that were meant to move on their own. If your printer is already on, it will "help" you to remove the ink.

    • 2

Lift the top half of the printer up. You can see which part to lift by looking at the line running across the mid-section of your printer. Lift the portion above this line up. This will expose the working parts inside and especially the ink cartridges.

    • 3

Cancel out of any warnings that appear on your computer. Often your computer will warn you that your printer cover is up in case it had been opened inadvertently. There is no risk to your printer or computer posed by opening the cover as long as it is returned to its proper operating location when you are finished.

    • 4

Watch the printer cartridge move back and forth inside the printer until it stops on the right-hand side. This portion of the printer is designed especially for cartridge placement and removal. There is plenty of space to maneuver your hands there.

    • 5

Place your middle and index fingers in the groves above the cartridge and lift the cartridge out of the holder with your thumb. If done properly, the cartridge should pop right out into your hand. Often there will be a diagram next to the loading and unloading area that indicates the proper posture and procedure for removing ink cartridges.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can always check the owner's manual or the printer company's website for more information, or have the person in charge of your network or tech department at work show you how it is done.

  • Although modern cartridges are generally safe from spillage, overexertion in removing them could potentially crack the cartridge itself and cause the residual ink to spill. Use caution in handling these pieces of equipment.
