Things You'll Need:
- Computer/smart phone
- Internet access

Step 1
Determine which details about your business you want to promote. If you are a retailer with many different sales categories, this may be the hardest part of the keyword selection. However, if your business specializes in one thing (for example, cell phones), this is much more simple.
If you provide a special customer service, free shipping or some other extra perk that customers would find useful, this might be something to consider using as a keyword selection. -
Step 2
Decide who your advertising is intended to reach and how you'd like to find them. If you are only looking for teenagers, think in that mindset. If you're looking for people only looking for phones, consider use of words related to this. However, there are other ways to reach your intended audience. One is to find them indirectly based on their searches. Political campaigns make excellent use of this strategy by selecting keywords of potentially disgruntled voters such as foreclosure, banks, credit cards and stimulus check. They are reaching an entirely different audience with this type of keyword selection because these searchers weren't originally looking for the political campaign. However, getting your ad out there in front of these people through indirect keywords increases your chances for increased hits.
-
Step 3
Resist the urge to use generic keywords. For instance, don't use the word "computer" if your business sells computers and software. Be more specific and detailed with your choices.
-
Step 4
Think out of the box. Be creative when you're selecting your keywords. If your company sells ladies' wallets, use the words "handbags" and "purses." This would be the use of complementing items. If you sell ink or toner cartridges, use the word "printer" or specific printer names for which you carry ink or toner.
-
Step 5
Use a keyword checker to determine how good your selected keywords are. You want plenty of hits for the words you select. However, if your selections yield 100,000 sites or more, that's a lot of competition for you. Try to be more specific when making your selections so that you're getting your money's worth. Use a checker like Wordpot or Adwords from Google.
