How to Record Spirit Voices

Ghost hunting has increased in popularity over the last few years as evidenced by the number of reality programs, such as "Ghost Hunters" on the Sci-Fi Network. Many people believe that spirits of the deceased can be contacted and are willing to speak to the living. Ghost hunters believe that spirits use electricity to manifest and that the presence of white noise allows spirits to imprint their voices digitally onto recording devices that produce white noise. These voice imprints are called EVPs, which stands for "electronic voice phenomena." Find out what tools you need and where you can go to record spirit voices for yourself.

Locate a digital recording device. It doesn't have to be fancy, but try to get one that uses USB to transfer your recordings to the computer. Digital voice recorders generate internal white noise, which is the method by which spirits can imprint their voices on the recording. You can use a digital camcorder to capture sound as well, with the added bonus that you may get a spirit apparition.

Find a location to speak to the dead. A cemetery is a good place to start. If you believe you have a spirit in your home who is trying to communicate, you can consider leaving the recorder on while you sleep. Time of day doesn't matter.

Ask questions of the spirits but give them time to answer. Beginning ghost hunters have a tendency to talk too much, and when a spirit voice is captured, there are usually people talking over them. Ask questions such as "Do you have anything you want to say?" or "What is your name?" and then be quiet for 30 seconds or so.

Upload your digital sessions to your computer and use audio software to play back the recordings. Audacity is a free professional audio software with powerful editing features that allows you to isolate voices and enhance them (see link in Resources). Listen carefully for any voices on the recording, especially beneath any talking you may be doing. Use your audio software to cut pieces of the recording where you find something, and then use editing tools to clean the track up until you can clearly hear what your spirit has to say. Save your "finds" to CD.
