Step 1
Secure a location for your daycare facility. You may want to operate your daycare business in a child care facility or in your own home. It is important to decide the place of business because different rules govern different settings. Daycare owners may find that it is beneficial to have a dedicated day care facility that has all the resources they need to run a daycare effectively.
-
Step 2
Hire staff. It's important that the staff comply with the rules set by the human services department in Michigan. The staff should include a daycare director, who is at least 21 years old with a certification in the child development field. Providers and volunteers should always be supervised and have a clean criminal record.
-
Step 3
Provide training for staff. It's important to provide the proper training for your daycare staff to ensure they are qualified to take care of the kids in their care. In Michigan, caregivers need to have CPR training and first aid certification. Annual training hours totaling 12 hours on other child development topics referenced in Michigan law are also required.
-
Step 4
Apply for a license. Daycare providers in Michigan must go through the State of Michigan Department of Human Services for a license. The state has to approve your license and give it to you before you can operate legally. You need to certify in the application that you meet all the requirements as stated in the licensing guide. Once the application is approved, the state will register you as an approved day care center.
-
Step 5
Create a program for the children in your daycare. It's important to have both an academic and social focus. Teaching basics, like letters and numbers, are important for younger children as are group activities that teach them how to socialize with other children. Many parents choose a daycare based on the curriculum offered, so in order to be competitive, you need a well-rounded, academically-focused daily plan for the children in your care.
