How to Recover Deleted Mac Files

Many times we lose video, image or text files because of system errors, hard drive failures and accidental deletes. If you have recently lost files and forgotten to back them up on your Macintosh system, you can trace and recover them using a data recovery program. These programs search for files through root systems, and folders on your hard drive, allowing you to recover and save them to your Mac.

  1. Step 1

    Get a Macintosh data recovery programs, such as the popular Data Rescue 2 for Mac, which has received great reviews for its deep scanning abilities. You want a program that has deep scan options to better locate files. This feature makes the search longer, but gives you a better chance of locating deleted files.

  2. Step 2

    Pick up a program that allows you to search for pictures, documents or video files separately rather than just as a collection. Compare advanced options which allow you to scan deeper roots and file systems to locate deleted files. Some programs are too basic, and only search the surface.

  3. Step 3

    Follow the setup instructions to install your chosen recovery program to your Macintosh. Launch your program from the Applications folder.

  4. Step 4

    Scan your hard drive to trace your deleted files. Different data recovery programs offer different scanning options, but all are generally similar. Some programs offer deep scanning modes, which take longer to scan, but have a greater chance of locating your deleted files.

  5. Step 5

    Select the files that you want to recover, then select the recovery button supplied. Select your location and save your files.
