How to Create a Cozy Patio

A patio is one place you can escape to anytime you want. Create a cozy and inviting patio with a variety of decorating tips to design your ideal outdoor retreat. An inviting patio includes various elements, including privacy, color and lighting, to transform the space from plain into a welcoming ambiance. No matter what your budget is for the update, there are plenty of tips you can incorporate into your own patio space.

1. Cover the patio area to create a secluded environment. Enclosing the patio cuts down on noise from the surrounding area. Hang a screen or fabric curtains around the patio to shield the space from the street, or add a trellis and flowering vine, such as clematis, wisteria or honeysuckle, to offer privacy and fragrance.

2. Add furnishings to the space. For a cozy reading nook, add a comfortable chair and small side table to the patio. For a larger space, add a dining set for outdoor entertaining. If your patio is small, a comfortable chaise lounge or bench is ideal for relaxing.

3. Place a water fountain or sound system within the patio space. Sounds from a water fountain enhance the tranquil feel of a patio and help to minimize outside noise. A sound system allows you to play your favorite music to relax or create an inviting ambiance for outdoor socializing.

4. Complement the colors of the home's interior with like-colored furniture or decor on the patio. Incorporate color into the space with colored or patterned pillows or seat cushions, which also offer comfort when using the furniture. Introduce additional color and fragrance into the space through potted flowers or herbs, such as lavender, peppermint or petunias.

5. Illuminate the patio for use in the evening. String twinkling lights or paper lanterns overhead to create a cozy and romantic setting or, in a larger space, add a small fire pit to stay warm during cool nights.
