How to Make Your Own Natural Lipstick
Natural lipstick doesn't have to be expensive. Make your own in a variety of shades using beet juice or beetroot powder. Combined with almond oil and beeswax, your homemade lipstick will be gentle on your pocketbook as well as free of chemical dyes and preservatives. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- 2 tbsp. almond oil
- 1 tbsp. grated beeswax
- Double boiler
- 1 tsp. beet juice or beetroot powder
- Lidded container
- Lipstick brush or cotton swab

Combine 2 tbsp. olive oil with 1 tbsp. grated beeswax in the top of a double boiler. Heat on low heat until the beeswax is completely melted. If you prefer, place the oil and beeswax in a microwave-safe dish and heat on high for 1 to 2 minutes.

Add 1 tsp. beet juice or beetroot powder to the heated oil mixture. Stir to combine thoroughly. This amount of beet juice will provide basic coloring for your natural lipstick, but you can add more or less depending on how deep you want the color.

Remove the lipstick mixture from the heat. Transfer immediately to a small lidded container such as a baby food jar or empty lip gloss pot that you have thoroughly cleaned. Allow the mixture to cool completely. Apply to your lips with a clean finger, lipstick brush or cotton swab.

Tips & Warnings
Add more color as the natural lipstick cools until you reach the desired shade. You can create anything from a soft pink to a deep natural red lipstick by adjusting the amount of beet juice or beetroot powder.
The mixture may appear to separate when you add the beet juice or beetroot powder to the melted oil base. However, the mixture will come together when cooled, so simply combine as best you can at this point of preparation.
