Standing Wheelie

Want to impress your friends by doing awesome wheelies on your motorcycle? Then keep reading the steps below. This article will explain how to wheelie your basic 600cc sport bike. It is a guide on how to do a beginners wheelie.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A Motorcycle
  • A Helmet for safety
  • Motorcycle Jacket for safety
  • Gloves for safety
  • Long pants and boots for safety
  1. Step 1

First thing is first. Start by wearing all the proper safety equipment. Wheelies maybe cool but they're not so impressive when your being rushed to the hospital. You want to fined a long open stretch of isolated road; somewhere with not a lot of traffic. If you can fined a parking lot big enough, that would be ideal.

  2. Step 2

A 600cc sport bike will wheelie off a crack of the throttle in first gear between an rpm range of 6k to 8k depending on your bike. For the first try, I recommend that you do not go above 6k when you crack (open) the throttle. When you do crack the throttle you will be turning it about a 1/4 inch to a 1/2 inch in a fast motion. Also for the first try; do not try an hold the wheelie up even though your instincts won't let you anyways. If the wheel does come up the first time you will most likely let off the throttle and the wheel will slam back down. This is ok and normal for the first try. If the wheel doesn't come up, try opening the throttle quicker or farther or both. If still nothing happens then go to 7k then 8k until you start to notice the wheel lifting off the ground. The wheel should definitely start to come up at around 8k in first gear, if not, you are doing something wrong.

  3. Step 3

Start off by accelerating up to 6k rpm line, you will be doing roughly 25 to 30 mph at 6k. Hold steady at the 6k rpm line and ease off the gas just ever so slightly and only for a split second, then crack the throttle. If the wheel comes up, congratulations you did your first wheelie. If the wheel doesn't come up try it again but this time crack the throttle at the 7k rpm line. On my bike (2008 Honda CBR600RR) the 7k line is the sweet spot for first gear wheelies. It always pops the front up about half way to 12 o'clock leaving plenty of height and rpm range to ride it out. Keep trying this; easy your way into it. Never rush anything. Until you find your sweet spot.

  4. Step 4

Once you have found your sweet spot and are use to popping the front tire up off the ground you should practice easing the front tire back down so your not slamming it into the ground all the time. The best why to do this is by popping the front up and then backing off the throttle slightly but still giving it gas. The more you back off the throttle the harder the front will slam down. So keep trying backing of the throttle when the wheel is in the air until you can consistently keep it landing smoothly.

  5. Step 5

The next step is being able to hold the front wheel off the ground for a longer period of time, ridding the wheelie. To do this you start by lifting the front wheel off the ground. Now is the tricky part. If you don't back off the throttle the wheel will keep lifting higher and higher and you will continue to accelerate. This is fine if you back off before your front tire hits the 12 o'clock position which is straight up. You can ride the wheelie out until this point and then will have to set if back down. Unless you learn good throttle control to the point where you can keep backing off and adding throttle to lower and raise the front wheel to keep a steady speed and not let the wheel drop. This will take a lot of practice and is more dangerous then just popping the front up and riding it out until you tack the rpm's out. In first gear the throttle is very sensitive so take extreme caution when trying this. A little less throttle is always better then to much. Be patient! Don't rush!

Tips & Warnings
  • This takes patients. You cannot rush this or you will get hurt.
  • Take your time and only do what you feel comfortable with.
  • Work your way up through practice.
  • Motorcycle wheelies are dangerous and illegal. Do not let the police catch you doing this.
