To apply in person, you can make an appointment with your local DMV office over the phone, or just go in. It helps to get there first thing in the morning. You can download the proper forms online and fill them out ahead of time. The forms are the DL44 for a driver's license or identity card, or DL44C for applying for a commercial license. While at the DMV you will have to have your picture taken, get a thumb print and pay the application fee. The current application fee at time of this publication is $28. This is the same no matter which method you choose for renewal.

You can generally apply by mail if you are under 70 years old and your license will expire in less than two months from the date of postage. There are other provisions so check them out if you are thinking about applying by mail. If applying by mail, you will also have to fill out the California Driver License Renewal By Mail Eligibility Information form (DL 410FO). The application with the fee can be mailed to the address below.
