Step 1
Have the animal which bit you checked for rabies. If you know the animal does not have rabies, proceed to next step.

Step 2
Even if the animal that bit you does not have rabies, you may need to have a tetanus shot. Check with your local physician to see if you are up-to-date on your tetanus booster shots.

Step 3
Keep the bite area clean by washing with warm, soapy water three to four times per day.

Step 4
Take an over-the-counter medicine like acetaminophen, ibuprofen or aspirin to relieve pain and inflammation. Apply an over-the-counter anti-biotic cream to the bite area.

Call a doctor if you experience numbness or a tingling sensation in the bite area. Call a doctor if you notice the bite area is infected (redness, pus oozing from the bite area, warmth, swelling or red streaking). Call the doctor if you develop a high temperature or if you are having pain or cannot move the injured part of your body.
