Mononucleosis, also called "mono" or the kissing disease, is a common viral illness that can leave you feeling tired and weak for weeks or months. Mono goes away on its own, but here are some tips for fighting off the effects mono quickly.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Thermometer
  • Bed or couch
  • Mug
  • Water
  • Theraflu
  • Freezee pops
  • Multi vitamins
  1. Step 1

Make sure to get plenty of rest. Even if you have small children you need to take care of, either relax on the couch while they play in the same room, or see if a family member or friend can stop by for a little while so you can take a nap while they entertain the children.

  2. Step 2
    Centrum - Multivitamins

    Centrum - Multivitamins

Take multi vitamins every night. Most people take the vitamins in the morning with breakfast. It's actually better for you to take them at night - gives your body nutrients while you sleep.
Take Centrum, or find a generic brand (ie: Target brand, Walmart brand, etc).

  3. Step 3

Reduce your fever with acetaminophen. Tylenol or Ibuprofen are great for reducing your fever and helping with body aches.

  4. Step 4
Theraflu - Flu & Sore Throat

Theraflu - Flu & Sore Throat

Your throat/neck glands will swell up really bad and it'll be hard to talk, eat, drink or even breathe. When you get to this point, start drinking Theraflu. I recommend "Flu & Sore Throat" for daytime and "Night time" Theraflu before bed - it'll help you get a good night's rest, instead of waking up almost every hour because it's hard to breathe.

  5. Step 5

As soon as you start feeling a little better, don't over do anything. You'll find that you'll still get tired very quickly, and if you lift anything heavy or over work yourself, your left side will start to ache. That means your spleen is enlarging again, and you should take it easy.

  6. Step 6

Have some popsicle or freezee pops to cool your throat when it's sore. Drink/eat some hot soup as well. I recommend Mrs. Grass soup.

  7. Step 7

Make sure to get plenty of fluids and maintain good nutrition while sick. This will help to recuperate faster from mono.

Tips & Warnings
  • Get plenty of rest, either lay around on the couch, or take periodic naps.
  • Get lots of fluids.
  • The effects of mono can last a few weeks or several months. If you maintain good nutrition, get plenty of fluids, vitamins, and rest, you can fight it off in about a month.
  • Drink Theraflu when your glands begin to swell. The warmth and direct contact of acetaminophen will reduce the swelling much quicker and will help reduce discomfort.
  • Night sweats are a major symptom of mono. Try to change your sheets once a week when sick with mono. It'll help make you more comfortable when trying to rest.
  • Mono stays with you for life. You'll only have the symptoms of mono about 4 weeks after you contract it. Throughout your life, the virus (Epstein-Barr Virus) will become active. You will not know when it is active, but when it is, you will be capable of spreading the virus to others.
  • Be sure to rest and not lift heavy things for a while. If you do, you could rupture your spleen, which can be life threatening.
  • Make sure you see a doctor and get tested. Mono has almost all of the same symptoms as Renal Cell Cancer, other forms of cancer, and even Tuberculosis (TB). Visit your doctor and get checked out to rule out anything more serious than mono, and to confirm that you do indeed have mono.
