This article will describe the first steps in a muscle car restoration, in this article we'll go through the evaluation, and tear down processes.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hand Tools
  • Floor Jack
  • A Garage With Electricity
  • Engine Hoist
  1. Step 1

The Inventory Process: This is the process by which you access the damage on the car, to determine what you need to do to restore it.

Get out a notebook and pen, we'll be taking notes of the things that we need to repair, or replace.

  2. Step 2

Divide a page of the notebook in to three coulombs, the first coulomb will be called repair work, these are the things that you feel can be repaired, the next coulomb will be called replace, this is the parts that need to be replaced on the car, and the third coulomb will be called available parts, these are parts that are available through sources that you know.

  3. Step 3

On an other page of the notebook you'll be defining the things that you can do yourself, and the things that you'll need help with, divide this page in to two coulombs also and name the first one things that I know how to do, and name the second coulomb things I need help with.

  4. Step 4

During this evaluation you'll be looking at every system, and panel on the car, from brakes, to interior, and everything in between, you should take a lot of pictures of things, they will help you later.

  5. Step 5

The Tear Down Process: This is where we begin the actual work on the car,
during this process you’ll need to keep the notebook from the step above handy, because you will be finding more things to add to your list.

  6. Step 6

For safety make sure that your work area is clean before you begin the tear down process on the car.

  7. Step 7

It’s up to you where you begin this process, but I like to start from the front and work back, so I begin with the front clip of the car, I remove the fenders, bumper, hood, grille, valance, lights, and all of the rest of the components that make up the front of the car.

  8. Step 8

Once the front end is completely removed, I begin removing the engine, and transmission all as one unit is usually the easiest way to do it, make sure that you take a lot of pictures of the car as you remove the parts, it will help when it comes time to put the car back together.

  9. Step 9

If you just follow the car systematically from the the front to the back during your tear down, and continue taking a lot of pictures, you’ll find the this part is not all that difficult.
