Instructions

    • 1

Choose the areas of your yard where you want to plant flowers. Good locations for flowers include along the edge of your sidewalk, in barrels, bordering your house or deck and in window boxes.

    • 2

Take note of the conditions in the areas where you want to plant flowers. How much sun and shade does each area get and at what time of day? What type of soil is it? For example, does it look dry and sandy? Look like it has a lot of clay? Or is it dark and rich looking. If doing this confuses you, take a few samples and bring them with you to the flower nursery.

    • 3

Go to your local flower grower or nursery. Take your notes and soil sample with you. Choosing flowers at the nursery can be confusing, as you will see many beautiful flowers. However, don't just jump right in and start picking the ones you like the look of. First find a member of staff to speak to. Tell them that you are not an expert gardener and you are looking for flowers that will be easy to care for and that are hardy. Tell them about the areas where you want to plant flowers and show them the soil. They will be able to help you choose the best flowers to suit your local climate, soil conditions and lack of green thumb.

    • 4

Choose a top soil and plant food to suit the flowers you are going to buy. The nursery staff member can help you with this and tell you how to feed and water the flowers you are buying.

    • 5

Have an idea of some hardy, easy to grow flowers before your trip to the flower nursery. What works best will depend on where you live, but here are a few flower varieties to consider: Impatiens, Marigolds, Begonias, Daisies, Bachelor Buttons, Sweet Alyssum and Zinnias. Each of these flowers come in some great colors ranging from bright yellows and oranges to white, red, pink and purple. Impatiens don't mind where you plant them, whether it be shade or sun. Marigolds are good for those full sun garden locations and Begonias like part shaded areas. Each of these flowers just need a little water, food and the occasional removal of dead leaves and flower heads.

Arrange your flowers. When you plant your flowers you will want to arrange them according to color and the height they grow to. Put colors together that will blend nicely. For example, plant orange and yellow flowers together. White flowers blend nicely with any color. Make sure you put shorter plants in front. When you get flowers they should come with a little stick that tells you how high they grow.
