How to Make a Stereo Speaker
The manufacture and design of speakers can involve many disparate elements, from acoustics to materials science. But the average person doesn't have to be concerned about these things if they simply want to make a stereo speaker. With simple materials and off-the-shelf parts, the do-it-yourselfer can make a simple, good-sounding stereo speaker in just a short while.
Things You'll Need
- 5-1/4 inch car speaker
- 3/4 inch MDF (medium density fiberboard)
- Terminal cup
- Speaker wire
- Circular or table saw
- Jig saw
- Drill
- Screwdriver
- Wood screws
- Wood glue
Instructions
-
-
1
Cut the front and back panels for your speaker. Make each panel measure 10 by 7 inches.
-
2
Cut the side panels for your speaker. Cut two pieces of MDF, each measuring 10 by 6 inches.
-
-
3
Next, cut the top and bottom panels for your enclosure. These should measure 5-1/2 by 6 inches.
-
4
Cut openings for the speaker in the front panel. Use the speaker as a template for the opening, and center the opening. Cut an opening for the terminal cup in the rear panel--center it side to side and place it 1 inch up from the bottom. Use the terminal cup as a template for the opening's size.
-
5
Connect the side, top, and bottom panels together with wood screws and wood glue. Position the pieces so that the side panels overlap the joints with the top and bottom panels.
-
6
Attach the front and back panels to the assembly you made in Step 5. Use wood screws and wood glue to attach them.
-
7
Connect a 9-inch piece of wire to the tabs of the terminal cup. Now feed the loose end of the wire into the terminal cup opening from the outside, and then mount the cup into the opening with wood screws.

8
Connect the loose end of the wire to the speaker's terminals, and then mount the speaker into the opening with wood screws.
