How to Heal an Underactive Thyroid Without Medicine

An underactive thyroid, also known as hypothyroidism, lowers the body's metabolic rate, leaving you feeling tired and chilled. It can cause dry skin, hair loss and weight gain. Low thyroid function is more common in women, but men are susceptible, too. Hypothyroid is usually treated with daily prescription medication, but you can learn simple, drug-free techniques to stimulate your thyroid. To test for low thyroid function, take your temperature every morning. Chronically low morning temperatures--less than 97.8--may indicate low function.

Eat cruciferous vegetables, peanuts and soy products in moderation. These contain a substance called goitrogens, which may interfere with iodine uptake and increase hypothyroid symptoms. It is not necessary to eliminate these foods from your diet, but eat them in limited quantities. Avocado and coconut increase thyroid function. Avoid processed foods and caffeine.

Tap your thyroid to stimulate it. Your thyroid is located in the front of your neck. Imagine wearing a bow tie: That's where your thyroid rests. Three times a day, gently tap the area for 10 minutes with your fingertips.

Reduce stress. Consider yoga or meditation techniques that can lower blood pressure and improve stress reactions. Exercise lightly and regularly, and take a B-complex vitamin along with a multivitamin to balance stress hormones as well as improve general immune system response.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your symptoms worsen or do not improve significantly, speak to your doctor.
