How to Clear a Blocked Tear Duct
There are many reasons tear ducts can be blocked. For instance, a person may get an infection or have structural problems brought on by surgery. Tear ducts can also become blocked due to abnormal growths within the eye's drainage system. 1
Place warm compresses over your eyes. You can try using a warm, moist cloth if you prefer. This can help clear secretions, especially in babies. Ask a pediatrician exactly how to apply these compresses.

2
Visit your doctor. According to Yahoo! Health, many blocked tear ducts are caused by infections and can spread if left untreated. Your doctor can provide oral antibiotics that you can take on a daily basis until the duct is once again clear.

3
Consult with an ophthalmologist if antibiotics and compresses are not working. In some extreme cases, a cyst may need to be removed or other surgery may need to take place. Your ophthalmologist can better assess your need for surgery.

Wait for the duct to open. WebMD suggests this if the duct is in a newborn, as most tear ducts open up between six months and one year of age. Bring your child to the doctor. However, ask if any further steps are necessary at the time of your visit as you may be able to avoid unneeded procedures.
