How to Adjust a Torsion Spring Garage Door


The torsion spring helps the garage door open and close easily. There are two torsion springs at each side of the garage door. The springs are located at the top inside part of the garage door. If the garage door isn't opening or closing properly, then check the tension on the torsion springs for needed adjustments.You may need to have someone helping you to adjust the torsion spring because it can be potentially dangerous.

Things You'll Need

  • Ladder
  • Wrench
  • 2 Tension rods (18 inches long and 1/2 inch wide)
  • Look for a reddish cone on the torsion spring. The cone is on the torsion spring on the left side away from the center of the garage door. This cone has notches in it that are used to adjust the tension in the torsion spring.

  • Use a metal rod to stick in the first notch of the cone. The rod will need to be at least 18 inches long and 1/2 inch in diameter. This rod will keep the spring in place while you continue to the next step.

  • Take a wrench to loosen the two screws on the cone. The screws will need to be loosened to move the cone and adjust the tension of the rod. Have another person hold the rod in place to make sure that it doesn't come out while you begin to loosen the screws. If the rod comes loose then the torsion spring could snap and cause bodily harm.

  • Get another metal rod of the same size. Once the screws are loosened, place the second metal rod into an opposite notch on the cone and turn both rods to the right or to the left depending on whether you are tightening or loosening the tension. If the garage door easily swings open and closed then it will need to be tightened. Turn the rods to the right. To loosen the tension turn it to the left.

  • Tighten the screws. Remove one rod and keep the other rod in place until the screws are tightened.
