Step 1
First, decide where you will hold the golf tournament. Ask around to see if anyone on the fundraising committee or within the charity has any connections to a golf course or country club.
-
Step 2
Once you have secured a golf course location, set a date for the tournament. Make sure you don't set the date for a holiday weekend or when other events will be taking place in your area, such as graduations.
-
Step 3
Contact local restaurants or caterers to get prices for the box lunch, and any other food that you will serve at the conclusion of the tournament. Check with the golf course personnel for referrals. They probably have a food service contact that they regularly work with for tournaments.
-
Step 4
Decide how much you will charge the golfers to participate. It is customary to include a box lunch.
-
Step 5
Next, you will need sponsors. The general protocol for a charity golf tournament is to have businesses or individuals sponsor a hole. You can create different levels of sponsorship based on the amount donated.
-
Step 6
Collect donations for goodie bags. Golf tournaments are a great opportunity for businesses to get some free advertising. Check with local businesses for promotional freebies to put in the goodie bags. Items you can add to goodie bags include promotional materials such as magnets, pens, pads of paper, letter openers, coupons, golf balls, coffee mugs, product samples, candy, and other small items.
-
Step 7
Next, you will need to promote the event. Since your golf tournament is for charity, the media may agree to promote your even for free. Check with your local newspaper, community magazines, and local radio station to see if they will promote the tournament. Leave flyers at the golf course will be held so that golfers can register to play. Check with other golf courses in the area to see if they will let you leave flyers about the event in their pro shop.
-
Step 8
Make sure anyone involved including the caterer, golf course personnel, advertisers, and players know that your tournament is for fundraising – they may be more generous with pricing and donations and overall promotion of your event.
