Step 1
Go to your local animal shelter. The Humane Society and The Dumb Friends League are great places to adopt a pet. Pet stores hold animal adoptions but make sure they don’t purchase animals from places such as Puppy Mills.
-
Step 2
If you want a puppy or kitten, animal shelters have them. Often people assume unwanted animals from animal shelters are primarily adult but this just isn’t true. They even have pure bread breeds if you are looking for a certain type of dog or cat. You may have to make a few extra visits but you must remember, animal shelters acquire all sorts of different animals that will be a great addition to your life.
-
Step 3
Decide on what size and breed you are looking for. It might seem difficult to determine which breed a dog comes from, especially since many have mixed breeds but do some research. Learn about the different breeds and what their temperament is and decide whether this type of dog will be a good fit. A dog that needs a lot of exercise and stimulation might be a handful for an owner who isn’t as agile so picking one that has a mellow demeanor would be wise. You should also make sure the dog will be comfortable around children.
-
Step 4
As you look for your pet, don’t be turned off by first impressions. Animal shelters are stressful and the animal you are looking at may not be acting their usual self. Give the animal a chance and ask the animal representative at the shelter to let you visit with the animal and see if you make a connection. If given a chance, the animal might relax and turn out to be a wonderful pet.
-
Step 5
Let the animal shelter assist you in your search for a pet. Some of these shelters will assist you in training, advice in being a good parent to your pet, and they are cheaper than buying your pet from a breeder or pet store.
-
Step 6
Don’t forget to neuter or spay your new pet. Most people don’t know this but by spaying or neutering your pet, you help extend their lives. The most important reason to spay or neuter your pet is to help prevent the unnecessary overpopulation of these sweet animals that will often end up homeless and lonely with bleak futures.
