Cooking soups are easy. Cook soups by using any frozen or raw vegetables of choice as the basic ingredient. Use either a carton or 2 cans (or more) of Swanson beef or chicken broth. Add salt and pepper and a little garlic and you have the easy basics for making any type of soup you want. Add any type of meat or chicken and you have a one dish meal. Save money buying food and complete this healthy lunch or dinner by adding a side of baked beans, salad and a warm buttered roll or garlic toast.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • package of split peas
  • package of small carrots
  • package of hot dogs
  • onion
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 6-7 glasses of water
  1. Step 1

Cook split pea soup by first pouring an opened package of green split peas into a colander or strainer and place under cold water to rinse. Buy the store brand to save money. Read the directions on the package to find out if the split peas need to be soaked in water before making the soup. Follow the printed directions to cook the split pea soup.

  2. Step 2

Cook chicken soup by cleaning and cutting a chicken in parts. Use a large stockpot and add six glasses of water (or more). Add chicken, cut up onions, carrots, a turnip, celery stalks, and salt and pepper to taste. Cook on the stove top under medium high until it simmers and looks like it is going to start to boil. Cover Keep an eye on the soup starts cooking in the pot or it will boil over. Cook low heat about 2 hours until chicken is soft.

  3. Step 3

Cook beef soup the same way you cook the chicken soup (see step 2). Add cut up beef instead of chicken the amount depending on how many you want to feed. Turn the heat down to low-medium. Stir the soup often with a wooden spoon and allow to cook on low for about 2-3 hours. Stir every so often to make sure that it does not get too thick. Do not add a more water once the soup starts cooking. The soup will become watered down and lose its taste.

  4. Step 4
    Slice each hot dog across

    Slice each hot dog across

Make a split pea soup change its taste by adding hot dogs to the almost finished cooking soup. Slice across each of the hot dogs into about 7 pieces. Toss them into the cooking pea soup about 1/2 hour before the soup is finished cooking. Franks are already cooked so it does not take much time to cook them. Serve with a green salad and sliced and buttered garlic toast for a really cheap meal that is healthy and each of the soups tastes delicious.

Tips & Warnings
  • Split pea soup thickens as it cooks. Stir often. If it is not yet puree and is too thick, add a little more water.
  • Add more water if you want to make a thinner soup or make it go further.
  • Split pea soups can saved in containers or plastic baggies and frozen and reheated at another time.
  • Add the franks to the soup about 15 minutes prior to serving. It does not take long for the hot dog slices to cook.
  • Cook soups under low in a crock pot if you prefer. This is an inexpensive meal but healthy and satisfying.
