Watermelon shakes are the ideal beverage for a hot summer day. They really cool you off after exercise, are simple to make, and don't have any artificial ingredients. So, break out the blender and get going. Does this Spark an idea?

      For a few servings, cut a thick slice of watermelon and remove the pink flesh from the rind with your chef's knife. Roughly cube the watermelon, and remove seeds if you're not using a seedless watermelon. Add the cubes to the blender.

      Next, add ice cubes (roughly as much ice as watermelon) to the blender, along with about a heaping teaspoon of sugar or other sweetener. Don't add too much sugar at first -- you might need to add more later, as watermelons can differ in sweetness depending on how ripe they are.

      Add a small amount of cool water to the blender. Having a little water in the blender will help homogenize the ingredients when you get started.

      Blend the ingredients. Typically, pulsing the blender at the beginning will help get things going, then flick it over to "ice crush" or "frappe" for a couple of minutes.

      Taste the shake a bit to make sure that it is the desired sweetness, and then serve in tall glasses. A green straw really accentuates the watermelon color and adds a nice touch.

Tips & Warnings

  • For an alcoholic version, add a little extra sugar, and either light rum or vodka.

  • Rinsing the blender right away after serving will make clean up easier.
