Things You'll Need:
- Musical Group
- Talent
- Drive
- Luck
- Persistence
- Band Members
- Van
- CDs
-
Step 1
To get signed the first thing a band or a group must do is to make sure that they are competent at their instruments and write good songs. The songs do not have to be technically difficult, but if the goal of the band is to get signed to a record a label then the songs should be short, catchy, and have a great hook.
-
Step 2
Once the music is there the band must begin to promote themselves to get to a level of recognition where a label will notice that they even exist. To do this bands need to perfect their live show, tour constantly, and sell a few thousand CDs.
-
Step 3
A few years ago that was all a band or artist had to do to get a lucrative record contract. Now, however, with the internet, there are many more bands and a lot more competition. The internet is the next frontier and for a band to get noticed they must have a strong online presence, maybe even stronger than their offline presence.
-
Step 4
While the band is touring, writing, and promoting, they also need to think about the business side of the band or group before a record label is in the picture. Attorneys, managers, agents, and accountants should be contacted before egos and money get involved.
-
Step 5
A band agreement between the members should be agreed on and everyone in the band should be on board with the decision to sign to a record label.
-
Step 6
The formula to get signed is simple, write good music, tour, sell a lot of records and build buzz. The problem is finding a group of musicians who can work together for a long period of time with no guaranteed reward. Additionally, some bands find that once they are at the level where they have gained record label interest that they would rather keep doing the work themselves and keep a higher percentage of the income they generate.
