Step 1
The first thing you need to do is make sure you keep your legs in shape during the off season if you only hike in the warm months. Working out several time a week inside doing deep knee bends and even jogging in place is good for your legs. You can find hiking trails close to your house to walk on during the winter to stay in shape. Walking up hills or a slope will keep your ankles in shape. If your are walking put some weight in your backpack the extra weight will make your muscles work harder.

Step 2
Another great exercise to do in the winter to keep in shape for hiking is swimming. Swimming works your arm and legs and is a good cardiovascular work out. If the weather is bad and you have a set of stairs in your house or apartment use them to walk up and down. Make sure to ware your backpack with extra weight. Work your lower legs by walking on the steps with just your toes this is good for your calf muscles. Brace yourself with your arms on the back of a couch or chair and with a weighted backpack do several repetitions of deep knee bends.

Step 3
Keep hydrated and drink plenty of water and food high in proteins and carbohydrates after each work out. There are many other work outs for backpacking and hiking so only do the ones that you are comfortable with. Staying in shape will help you enjoy getting out there hiking and backpacking.
