Adding highlights is a great way to make a subtle or even dramatic change to your appearance. And unless your hair is very long it's quite easy to save some money and do the highlights yourself. If you're hair is longer. That doesn't mean that you still can't do it at home, but you might want to get a friend to lend a hand.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide on your look and purchase your supplies.
Do you want to go subtle or do you prefer a more dramatic look? Be sure to pick a color that compliments your hair color. For instance if your hair is dark then caramel or red highlights will be more complimentary.

  2. Step 2

Don't wash your hair for a day or two before highlighting. The natural oils in your hair will help to protect it from the chemicals.

  3. Step 3

Before getting started put on an old t-shirt so that you don't ruin your nice clothes. And take the time to read all your instructions and ready your work place.

  4. Step 4

Brush your hair into it's usual style and put an old towel around your shoulders to catch any drips. And don't forget to wear the plastic gloves that came with your highlighting kit.

  5. Step 5

Add the highlighting solution to your hair taking care to saturate the hair. About halfway through the process it's always a good idea to check your process, just take a paper towel and wipe the color from a strand of hair. Keep in mind that your hair is wet so the finished result will be a little lighter.

  6. Step 6

After you've finished with the highlighting process rinse your hair thoroughly and apply conditioner. Allowing the conditioner to set on your hair for a couple of minutes before rinsing. You don't want to shampoo because this may remove or fade some of the color.

  7. Step 7

Now it's time to blow dry and take a look at your new highlights. If the effects are to subtle just wait a couple of weeks and add a few more highlights until you achieve the effect that you are striving for.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always do a test strand first. This will give you an idea of how long it will take and what your finished color will look like.
  • Leaving the color on for to long is a great way to wreck your hair so always follow instructions!
  • If you experience any problems at all seek professional help before trying to fix it yourself!
