How to Remove a Pocket Door

Pocket doors slide in and out of a wall, which saves floor and wall space typically required by a standard hinged or swinging door. Though functional, pocket doors can be tricky to repair or replace, especially if the tracks or hardware are located inside the wall.       Use a utility knife or razor blade to cut the paint and caulk along the edge of the door stop---the strip of wood that runs along the door jamb. Cut slowly and carefully so the knife does not slip and damage the woodwork or your cut your hands.

      Use a putty knife or pry bar to lift off the door stops. There is usually a stop nailed on each side of the door jamb. Be careful not to damage or break the wood so you can use it again, if needed.

      Close the pocket door so it covers the doorway.

      Check out the track above the door and see which side is open. Standing on the side of the open track, pull and lift the door toward you at a 30-degree angle until the rollers are removed from the track. You may need one person on each side of the door to lift and maneuver the door.

      Pull the pocket door off the tracks and away from the doorway.
