Because you have so much going on in your life, anything that can make your life easier is well worth the time and energy spent to get it going. Your Gmail email account is something that you likely use on a daily basis. If you have the Outlook Express email program on your computer, you can set up your Gmail account in the email program. Doing so will save you the few extra minutes that it takes to open up your Web browser to go directly to the site.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Log into your Gmail account. Click on the "Settings" link that is located in the top right-hand corner of the page. Click on the link that says "Forwarding and POP/IMAP."

  2. Step 2

    Click on the radio button that says "Enable IMAP." This will be located in the section that says "IMAP Access." Click on the option to "Save Changes."

  3. Step 3

    Open your Outlook Express email program. Click on "Tools," which is located on the menu bar. Select the "Accounts" option. Click on the "Add" button. Select "Mail."

  4. Step 4

    Enter a name for your email account and click "Next." Enter your Gmail email address. Click on "Next." Select "IMAP" as the appropriate server type from the drop-down menu.

  5. Step 5

    Type "imap.gmail.com" as the incoming mail server setting. Type "smtp.gmail.com" as the outgoing mail server setting. Select "Next."

  6. Step 6

    Type in your Gmail email address for the "Account Name." Type your password. Hit "Next." Select "Finish."

  7. Step 7

    Highlight your Gmail account and click on "Properties." Under the "Advanced " tab, put a checkmark in both of the boxes that read "This server requires a secure connection." In the first text box , for the outgoing mail server, enter the numbers "465." In the second text box, for incoming mail, enter the numbers "993."

  8. Step 8

    Click on the "Servers" tab. Put a checkmark in the box at the bottom that indicates "My Server Requires Authentication." Click "Apply." Select "OK."

  9. Step 9

    Send a test email from yourself to yourself using Outlook Express to ensure that your Gmail account is working properly.
