1
Start by measuring the size of your air ducts. Most homes will have a standard size duct, but mobile home ducts may be slightly smaller. Older homes may not have standard ducts either, and many may vary in shape and size from room to room.

2
Decide if you want a decorative duct cover, or a simple one. If you are certain that you will be closing off a duct permanently, you can select a duct cover that will not reopen. However, it is best to pick a duct cover that will give you the option of reopening the duct at a later time.

3
Insert the duct cover into the open duct. The fit should be tight, without having to force the cover over the duct. Do not try to shove the cover in, since you may warp the duct.
-
4
Check for any edges where air can escape. If your air duct cover is not tight, it will be possible for air to escape through the edges, negating your energy savings. Place duct tape around these edges. For aesthetics, you can paint the tape to match the color of your walls, or the duct cover itself.
