Instructions

  1. Choose a Base Decoration

    • 1

Select some cookies for pre-coloring. Beat one egg yolk thoroughly and mix it with 1/4 tsp. of water. Add food coloring to create the pre-coloring mixture. Dip clean paintbrushes in the mixture and apply it to the top of the cookies before baking.

    • 2

Select some cookies to dip in chocolate. Place 1 cup of chocolate chips in the microwave and heat for 45 seconds to 1 minute. Use a paintbrush to apply the melted chocolate to the top of the baked cookies.

    • 3

Select some cookies to be covered with rolled fondant. Roll out the fondant icing and use your cookie cutters to create shapes that match the cookies. Place fondant shapes over coordinated cookies as soon as they are removed from the oven, and the warmth of the cookie will help the fondant spread evenly.

    • 4

Select some cookies for traditional frosting. Add 1 or 2 drops of food coloring to each tin of white frosting and mix thoroughly with a knife to create pastel frosting. Spread the frosting on top of the baked cookies evenly, removing any excess from the sides with a wet sponge.

    Create Accent Decorations

    • 5

Apply candies to the top of the cookies. Shake colored sprinkles, multicolored nonpareils or purchased colored sugar on top of the frosting.

    • 6

Pipe accent frosting onto cookies. Make accent frosting dispensers by cutting an 18-inch-square piece of wax paper with scissors. Bring diagonally opposing corners toward each other, twisting the paper into a conical shape and securing the outer seam with tape. Fill each dispenser with frosting and make designs on the cookies by squeezing wavy, jagged or criss-cross lines onto the cookie tops.

    • 7

Add adornments to your cookies. Press chopped licorice pieces, jelly beans, nonpareils and silver or gold edible dragees into the frosting as whimsical accents.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add decorations immediately after frosting the cookies so that the toppings secure as the icing hardens. Add accent decorations to chocolate-dipped cookies before the chocolate hardens.

  • Instruct children to wash their hands thoroughly after handling raw egg yolks.
