Delete unused items to free up space and fix your device.

Vanishing call logs and messages can leave you scratching your head. Never fear, your BlackBerry isn't possessed. It's just creating much needed space. BlackBerry devices have a feature called the Low Memory Manager built in to keep them running smoothly. Your BlackBerry needs a certain amount -- at least 400 kilobytes --) of free memory to operate. Once you're below that amount, the device will start deleting information. Messages and call logs are considered low priority, and they're deleted first. The problem is relatively easy to fix.

Instructions

  1. Check Available Memory

    • 1

Press the BlackBerry "Menu" key to open your full applications list.

    • 2

      Select the "Options" icon.

    • 3

Select "Device," then select "Device and "Status Information." If your BlackBerry is running a earlier version of software -- 5.0 or lower -- select "Options," "Status," then "File Free."

    • 4

Verify the "File Free" field. To disable the low memory manager function, it must read 409,600 Bytes or more.

    Delete Unused Applications

    • 5

Select "All" from your home screen, then open "Options."

    • 6

Select "Device." Choose "Application Management." Wait for your list of applications to be displayed.

    • 7

Select the application you wish to remove. The "Properties" screen appears. Select "Delete."

    • 8

Repeat for each application you wish to remove.

    Install Media Card

    • 9

Insert a microSD card into the BlackBerry's memory card slot. Most are housed near the battery -- slide off the back cover to access the card slot. See your user guide for detailed, device specific instructions on media card installation.

    • 10

Open your menu, then select "Camera." Press the "Menu" option again to open the camera list of options.

    • 11

Select the "Store Pictures" option. Choose "On Media Card." This ensures all photos will be saved to the card, rather than the phone, which uses up device memory. Once the card is installed, ringtones, music and videos will also be saved to it.

Clean Up Old And Unused Items

    • 12

Open your "Messages" folder periodically and delete messages you do not need -- especially those with large attachments. To delete an individual message, open the message and press "Menu." Select "Delete."

    • 13

Adjust your "Keep Messages" settings to automatically delete older messages and free up space. Open a messages folder, then press "Options." Choose "Message Display and Actions." Select "Days To Keep Messages" and choose "15" or "30."

    • 14

Remove languages you don't use from the phone. Select "All" from the home screen, then choose "Setup." Select "Languages," then select "Manage Languages." Choose the language you wish to use and click "Update."
