In this article, you will discover the secret to being an effective and positive encouragement in the lives of your friends, family, loved ones and others that you encounter who may be in need of some uplifting.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • to be a good listener
  • to have an open mind
  • to have empathy and compassion for others.
  • a giving heart
  • a sense of humor.
  1. Step 1

When you are encouraging someone, be sure that you are a kind, compassionate and empathetic listener. Being an empathetic listener is a tremendously important step in the process of encouragement. This behavior enables the recipient of the encouragement to feel heard, respected, valued and important.

  2. Step 2

In the process of encouraging someone, your attitude is so important and has a major effect on your ability to effectively encourage someone else.

Be sure that you maintain a positive attitude. No matter the problem or situation, there is usually an answer or solution to be found. Keep this in mind. If you strive to maintain a positive attitude, it is more likely that the person who is on the receiving end of the encouragement will also have a positive attitude.

  3. Step 3

Having a good sense of humor about the problem or situation is also an essential part of encouraging someone effectively. Humor helps people by enabling them to maintain a positive attitude in spite of the problem, situation, or circumstance. In addition, humor enables people to see the bright side and realize that things may not really be as bad as they seem. When you are encouraging someone, the use of humor helps the process to be more effective.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you are encouraging someone, be sure to always treat them with respect, kindness, gentleness and dignity. Treat them the same way that you would want to be treated if the tables were turned and you were the one experiencing the same problem, situation or circumstance in your life.
  • Don't be judgemental toward the person whom you are trying to encourage.
  • Being judgemental is hateful, unkind, mean and disrespectful and does not help to encourage someone. Being judgemental can slow the encouragement process, impact the encouragement process in a negative way, or cause encouragement process to stop completely.
