How to Deal With Twins and a Toddler

Make sure she doesn't step on them and don't let him touch the potty!
Make sure she doesn't step on them and don't let him touch the potty!

Here are some simple tools to manage stressful times with twins and a toddler.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The first step is to realize that at certain times all of your children will want or need you at the same time.

  2. Step 2

The second step is make mental notes throughout the day to help you determine what your children may need. If you remember that Jacob woke up 45 minutes before Henry, he will likely be hungry before Henry, so feed him and give Henry a toy. It is a good idea to stagger feedings, it is easier on mom and children. I've tried to feed them simultaneously, and it is stressful and dangerous. If they would both start to choke at the same time, you're in trouble. If Henry only slept 20 minutes for his morning nap and he's fussy a few hours later, try putting him down for a nap before you try 10 other things to make him happy. Babies are fussy for many different reasons, so if you keep track of their eating and sleeping patterns, if makes it easier to figure out why they are crying.

  3. Step 3

The third step is to ask your toddler to help with the twins. Your toddler will want to help sometimes and other times he or she may be tired of dealing with the twins. Respect your toddler's wishes.

  4. Step 4

The last step is to take one moment at a time. Your toddler needs fed, diapers need changed and the dishes need done. Do what you can and then relax and enjoy the fun times.

on 5/24/2009 I wanted to add that your toddler needs some one on one time with you. Twins get most of the attention from friends and family and your toddler often feels left out.
