      My natural deer repellents...

My favorite way to get rid of deer from my garden and flowers is to sprinkle dog hair around the edges of the garden. The deer never even get close enough to actually sniff the hair - evidently, it's the smell that keeps them away from the garden. Of course, this involves some furry dogs - not an issue around here!

Of course, you could put up a fence but it would have to be at least 48" tall as deer will jump smaller barriers quite easily. While you're at it, add some chicken wire to keep rabbits and other garden pests at bay. Note: I've seen deer grazing quite comfortably inside a tall enclosure so, depending on how persistent the deer are, this may not work as a deer repellent.

A controversial way to keep rid deer from a garden is to have a male human urinate around the edges. This does provide some moderate protection for my flower garden but is a bit of an unconventional solution. Seems like the men I ask to do it though like it - go figure....

Hanging bars of Dial soap, for some reason, is a age-old method to repel deer - how it works is still under study but it does seem to protect trees. So, if you have fruit trees, drill a hole in an unwrapped bar of Dial soap, string on fishing wire and tie to a low lying branch. Eh, it's worth a try!

The last deer repellent method I've tried which seems to work fairly well is to mix Tabasco with water in a spray bottle and spray the plants. I wouldn't do this with garden plants but it seems to work quite well on the flowers I want to protect.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most deer repellents are controversial - some folks swear by certain methods. The only real way to keep deer out of a garden is to fully enclose the whole area (including the top) with wire. Costly but could be worth it in the long run.
