Fixing air conditioners can be a lucrative career. Like other building service professions it requires licensing. The process for licensing varies state to state, but there are some similarities. This article will walk you through the basic steps in becoming a heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) specialist, from looking up forms to registering for the Residential HVAC Exam with PSI Examination Services.

1
Go to your state's site for residential builders. It is usually maintained by a residential commission or the department of labor, licensing and regulation.
-
2
Search for applications and forms. You are specifically interested in the HVAC application. If they are not available online, call your local licensing and compliance office to request an application be mailed out to you.
-
-
3
Document your experience. Most states require at least one year of experience before you can apply for licensing. You will most likely also have to pay a small application fee in the range of $50 to $200.

4
Begin studying for the Residential HVAC Exam. There are many examination prep courses. Some states require you to complete the application process before you can apply for the exam. You might also be asked to pass the Business Management and Law Exam. Both are administered by PSI Examination Services (PSI). See Resources for a link to the site.

Submit test results to the licensing board per the instructions on the application. You might also need to submit proof of a surety bond in your name.
