How to Design a Real Estate Sign

Real estate signs are one of the basic tools in marketing property. They can be used to advertise if the property is for sale or for rent. They also advertise the real estate company. Sign companies can make your real estate sign using your custom design. After the sign is installed on the property, it can be modified by adding "sign riders." Sign riders are typically small metal one-line signs that might say "Swimming Pool," "Great View," or some other description.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your local government for sign regulations and codes for the area in which the signs will be posted. Municipalities will often have sign regulations. For example, there may be a size limit. In addition, the size limit for a commercial sign might be larger than for a residential sign.

Contact the local Realtor association, if you are a member. Obtain any information they have on state and local real estate sign regulations.

    • 3

Make the signs as large as legally permitted. A residential real estate sign might be about 18 by 24 inches.

    • 4

Decide on the purpose of the sign. Some real estate signs simply have the name of the broker and a contact phone number. These can then be used on rentals or houses for sale and can be customized with sign riders. However, a sign that clearly states "For Sale" or "For Rent" can be a clearer message for the potential client.

Choose easy-to-read colors and fonts. You will probably want to use your company's logo. Choose contrasting background colors. Remember that the potential client is likely to see the sign as he is driving by, and you want the sign to be very easy to read.

    • 6

Add the Fair Housing logo to the sign. Although commercial signs will not require the Fair Housing logo, if a commercial sign gets displayed on an apartment building, it will need one. So play it safe and include the logo on all your signs.

    • 7

Include your area code with the phone number on the sign. Someone driving by your sign may be from out of town and will need to know all 10 digits of the phone number.

Consider adding your website to the sign. If you have a company website or a virtual tour website, include the URL on the sign. Savvy real estate customers have become accustomed to searching for potential property online. Not only can they check that particular property, but they can search your website for other properties, too.
