If this happens to you and you need a copy for your records or for another reason, you need to know how to obtain a copy of a federal income tax return from the IRS. Completing the request for a copy of your return is easy and can be done quickly, but it can take about three to six weeks for the copy to arrive in the mail. Transcripts take about 10 days.

Obtain Form 4506 from the IRS. The form is called "Request for Copy of Tax Return."
Another option is to obtain the 4506-T "Request for Transcript of Tax Return" form to request a transcript of your federal tax return. This transcript will not have any other attachments, but it will have a line-by-line entry according to what you file.

Enter the first name shown on the federal tax return you are requesting, then spouse's name (if any), Social Security numbers and address that was on the specific federal tax return if different from your current address.

Enter the year of the tax return that you need. There is a fee of more than $50 for each year you request. Make checks or money orders payable to "United States Treasury."

Enter the number of returns requested and the total amount due for processing. Then sign and date the form. Mail to the address at the bottom of the form.
