How to Make a Dr. Suess Hat
Schools throughout America celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday on March 2. One fun way to remember the popular children's author is to make the tall, red-and-white striped hat worn by the main character in Dr. Seuss's "Cat in the Hat" story. A cheap and easy way to do this is by assembling a hat made of construction paper. Older children can do this with the guidance of an adult, but younger children will likely need help measuring and cutting the stripes and circles. You don't need to be precise, though, as the finished look of the hat should be somewhat crumpled.
Things You'll Need
- Large sheets of red and white construction paper
- Ruler
- Scissors

1
Lay down one piece of red 12-by-18-inch construction paper as the hat's base. Cut two strips of white 2 1/2-by-18-inch pieces of construction paper. Glue the white strips horizontally onto the red piece, placing one white strip 2 inches from the bottom edge and one white strip 2 inches from the top edge.
-
2
Bend the base piece to create a tube. Glue the two 12-inch sides together.

3
Stand the tube on another piece of red construction paper. Trace around the tube to create a circle. Stand the tube on a white piece of construction paper and trace around it to make a circle.
-
4
Make the top of the hat by drawing a second line around the outside of the red circle, about 1 inch larger than the traced line. Cut around the large circle. Cut horizontal slits every inch, snipping from the outside edge of the circle to the inside line. Bend down to create tabs. Place the top of the hat on top of the tube and glue the tabs to the inside of the tube to secure.
-
5
Make the brim of the hat by drawing a larger circle around the white circle. Draw the line about 3 inches from the traced line. Draw another line 1 inch inside the traced line. Cut along the inner and the outer lines. Make tabs by snipping from the inner cut edge to the line as instructed in previous step. Glue the tabs to the bottom of the hat on the inside of the tube.

6
Crush the hat slightly to give it a rumpled appearance.
