How to Play Original XBox Games on an Xbox360

With the introduction of the Xbox 360 in 2005, gamers learned that many, but not all, of the games they purchased for the Xbox would be playable on the 360 with a software upgrade. Making your Xbox 360 Backwards Compatible

Check Xbox.com to see if your original Xbox game is playable on the Xbox 360. A list of compatible games is available on the site under the "Backwards Compatible" link. If your game is not on the list, it will not play. Often, games that are not on the list are available for sale in the new 360 format.

If your game is on the backwards compatible list, insert it into the 360 console and access Xbox Live. The console will automatically detect the game and download the software "patch" necessary to play it. You must have an Xbox 360 with a hard drive to download the software. The 360 "Arcade" console does not have a hard drive, and is unable to play any original Xbox games.

If you are unable to access the software patch from Xbox Live, you can download it from Xbox.com and burn it to a CD or DVD. Once inserted into the 360, the console will detect the patch and load it.
