How to Build a Free Standing Kayak Storage Rack

- Tape measure
- Treated 2-by-4 inch lumber
- Saw
- Drill with a screw tip bit
- Deck screws

Determine the length of your stand by measuring your kayak or kayaks and subtracting 2 feet. Most kayaks are at least 10 feet, so a normal 8-foot 2-by-4 inch board will work.

Measure the width of your kayak to determine the width of the cross member pieces.

Decide on a height for your stand. For 2 kayaks a height of 4 feet is adequate.

Cut two boards in half with the saw.

Screw the four 4-foot sections to the four 8-foot sections on each end to create legs. Use four screws per leg to ensure that the legs do not move.

Attach cross members to the legged sections on the opposite side of the leg as depicted in the image. This will complete the form of the stand, which should resemble a large rectangle.

Store one kayak on the bottom section and one on the top. There will also be adequate room for paddles to be stored as well.

Tips & Warnings
You can make this shorter than 4 feet as long as there is enough room to store the bottom kayak.
