How to Teach Children's Church

Teaching children's church can be a very rewarding activity. But like any teaching gig, preparation is the key to success. Here's how to teach children's church.

• Worship music and music player
• Coloring pages and crayons
• Craft (optional)

Instructions

1. Write your teaching outline. You will need to know how much time you are allotted first. Then figure how much time you'll spend on each portion of your teaching. Work with the minute rule. If you'll be teaching five-year-olds, spend no more than five minutes on each section. Base your lesson on a Bible story or verse.

2. Gather your supplies. Don't forget to collect any crafting supplies you'll need. Also have some relevant coloring pages and crayons ready to reinforce your lesson. You will need worship music too.

3. Prepare your room or teaching area for your class. Have everything you need ready when your students arrive. You don't want to be fumbling for items while you are teaching. You may want to come early to set up.

4. Post your rules, and be sure to review them at the beginning of class. Write them colorfully on a poster board, and put them somewhere prominently at the kids' eye level. Also, consider having a positive reinforcement plan, such as awarding small toys or candy for good behavior.

5. Greet your kids with a smile. The biggest part of teaching is to genuinely enjoy yourself. Kids can spot the teacher who does not really want to be there. Relax and don't take yourself too seriously. Kids want to know that you care and that you are a real person.
