Liquid gas camp stoves are essential to the camping experience for millions of outdoor enthusiasts. Camp stoves dramatically increase the enjoyment of any outing by making it possible to easily and rapidly cook hot meals and beverages. Compared with cooking over an open fire, cooking with a liquid gas camp stove is more efficient and safer. Following are general instructions for using liquid gas camp stoves.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Camp stove
  • White gas
  • Long-handled match
  1. Step 1

Unscrew the flat-topped metal cap on the fuel tank slowly and remove. Fill the tank two-thirds of the way full with white gas made for use in camp stoves and lanterns. Screw the cap back on tightly. Wipe off any gas that has spilled and allow to dry thoroughly.

  2. Step 2

Pressurize the fuel tank by using the fuel tank's built-in pump. Start by unscrewing the knurled top or head of the pump rod, which has a hole in it and is on the fuel tank. You should be able to draw the pump rod in and out of the tank in an up and down manner. Place your thumb over the hole in the end of the pump rod head of the pump rod, gripping the backside of the pump rod head with two fingers. Push the pump rod up and down to pump air into and pressurize the fuel tank.

  3. Step 3

Stop pumping air into the fuel tank when you feel firm resistance when pumping and screw the cap of the pump rod tight.

  4. Step 4

Strike and light the long-handled match. Turn the gas dial until you hear gas rushing through the stove burner and then bring the match flame to the burner and light the stove. Extinguish the match.

  5. Step 5

Adjust the burner flame size as necessary depending on the level of heat needed. Regardless of the level of heat, the burner should emit a tight uniform blue flame all around. Avoid large yellow or orange flames that lap up around the sides of pots and pans and that throw off plumes of black soot.

Tips & Warnings
  • Shield the gas stove from wind for quicker, more efficient heating.
  • Be cautious when lighting a liquid gas camp stove. White gas is extremely flammable. Never attempt to light a stove after refueling if gas is spilled and the area is still wet. Wait until the fuel tank and stove are completely dry and, before lighting, make sure no gas is on the table or area the stove is sitting on. Always use liquid gas camp stoves in a well-ventilated area. Never use gas stoves inside tents, campers or other enclosed areas. Be sure to have the match lit before turning on the gas, to avoid explosive fireballs. If the match goes out without lighting the stove, turn off the gas and wait 30 seconds before trying to light the stove again.
