Just move to a new place? Don't know anybody? Here are some ways of getting out there and making some friends. Once you get to know a few people it will just snowball from there.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1
    Join a local sports team
     
    Join a local sports team

    Look up adult sports teams in the area that you can join. You don't have to be a super star, just go and have fun! Remember, Bowling and Pool can be included as a local sport team.

  2. Step 2
    Have a BBQ
     
    Have a BBQ

    Throw your own welcome to the neighborhood party. Invite your neighbors over for dinner or a BBQ and be open to being social.

  3. Step 3

    Invite some co-workers out on a Friday night for some drinks or dinner. Worse case scenario they invite you to their pre-planned event or you schedule for next week.

  4. Step 4

    Do some volunteer work. You will help others, boost your self esteem and meet others.

    Take a class that interest you. This is a great way to meet people who are into the same things you are. Classes can be anything from pottery to rock climbing. Partner dance lessons are really good to, and most of the time everyone is just learning so you won't look goofy.

    Look up any clubs in your area that you can join. Make sure its something that interest you. Anything from Reading clubs to hiking clubs. Be sure and attend meetings and get together' s.

    The internet is a good place to meet people too. Try meetup.com. As always be careful and safe when using the internet to meet people, not everyone is who they say they are.

    Talk to people
     
    Talk to people

    Try sparking a conversation with people while your out and about. Talk to the person behind the register at your coffee shop or to the repair man when they come out. You never know when you might click with someone.

  9. Step 9

    As you connect with people maintain your new found friendship by talking and getting together on a regular basis. Always be open to meeting their social circle as well, this will enlarge yours and open the door to connecting with more people. Before you know it you will have an active social life and be on your way to making some close friends.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your invited out, go!
  • Remember to socialize, if you do all of these but just hang out in the shadows you won't get to know anybody.
  • Be careful when using any online form of connecting with strangers.

on 7/3/2009 I think number 5 is the most important tip on here. Take a class or take up a hobby that interests you. Meeting somebody that way shows you already have at least one thing in common. Great article.
