A unique way to make your own wrapping paper or gift wrap is to either recycle your paper brown shopping bags, or buy brown craft paper and make a homemade potato stamp for stamping designs. This is a fun, easy and creative project for kids and adults that can be done all year round whenever you need wrapping paper.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Brown craft paper or paper grocery bags
  • Potatoes
  • Dye or markers
  1. Step 1

You don't need to purchase expensive rubber stamps to create a unique, trendy gift wrap for your wrapping paper needs. All you need is to take a look around your house, and assemble the following supplies: brown craft paper, or you can use old brown paper shopping bags from the grocery store, and a few potatoes. You will also need some form of dye, this could be watercolor paints, markers, or whatever you have available.

  2. Step 2

First, protect your work surface with newspaper. If you are using old shopping bags, turn them inside out, so the store logo and design is on the inside. If you are using craft paper, you are ready to go.

  3. Step 3

Now, take your potato, place on a hard surface, and cut it in half across the widest part. This will give you enough room to create a design. Now, take a small paring knife, and gently carve away some of the potato to create your design. Ideally, you will draw your design on the potato before carving, so you have a template of sorts to work from. Using straight lines in the design will simplify matters, and make the carving much easier.

  4. Step 4

Next, take your potato with your beautiful design and dip lightly into your dye or paint, or if desired, you can color the top of your cut out potato with a marker. Take your potato and press firmly onto your brown paper, do this repeatedly until you have made a design.

  5. Step 5

Allow the paint or dye to dry on your brown paper. Once it is dry you can use it to wrap all kinds of gifts and goodies for your loved ones.
