We all want to be a better friend to our friends. We all have almost invariably been in situations where we have a contentious relationship with someone. The best solution to this is to turn them into your friend.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Whether you are just looking to improve your friendship skills or if you are looking to turn that enemy or frenemy into your friend, there are easy steps to take which can achieve this. You will first and foremost need to be ready to leave YOUR comfort zone and do things that may make you uncomfortable.

  2. Step 2

Whether it is being a better friend or making a new friend, especially of your enemies, listening is key! You may notice with your friends you have a give and take relationship in which you both take turns telling each other problems, troubles or issues and the other gives advice. Worse yet, you may be the one always venting. Everyone wants to be heard and everyone wants to have their problems matter to someone else. The first step in being a better friend is to listen to your friends and also be observant of their moods. If you can master these two things you will be considered an invaluable friend and will notice less conflicts, more appreciation and more concern for you as well.

To observe your friends you need to know what signs they show when they are upset about something. What is it when they are busting with joy? If you start to know their emotions by signs and body language and can preempt them by asking them, "Why are you so happy/sad?", they will appreciate you to no end.

Also complimenting their hair, make-up (athletic ability or abilities if they are male), clothing and small things will also go a long way.

  3. Step 3

If you are trying to turn an enemy into a friend the actual steps are reversed. As you have yet to establish trust and communication it is up to you to open this up. You do this by starting with small compliments. This may be very hard with someone you do not like and at first you may well have to force yourself to compliment them. With time you will notice it goes more and more easily and will soon come natural to you. Unless the person is really a nasty piece of work they should slowly warm to you. When they do you come in for the kill and ask them all about themselves-there is no subject like asking someone about themselves to make them open up! In no time you will forget you were enemies and your life will actually become easier!

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not expect your biggest enemy to become your best friend-that will never happen
