How to Disable Wiikey

Gamers looking to squeeze a bit more functionality out of their Nintendo Wiis have found a mod chip known as the Wiikey. This chip, once installed, allows gamers to play software from any region in the world, as well as access backup copies of their games and even play DVDs. However, when the Wii detects this chip during updates and before some games are played, the console will shut itself down and (in some cases) become unusable. You need to follow a specific procedure to disable your Wiikey to prevent damage to the console.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Wii
    • CDRs
      • 1

Download and burn the Wiikey 1.9s update software to a disc. Also download the Wiikey 1.9s config software and place it on a separate disc. (See Resources.) You can use a CD burning program like Nero to accomplish this task.

      • 2

Turn on your Wii and insert the 1.9s update disc. Begin running the update, but keep watch over the percentage completed.

      • 3

Unplug the Wii when the update reaches 70 percent. This will corrupt the Wiikey data and effectively disable it, making it invisible to the Wii.

      • 4

Plug the Wii back in and restart the system. Insert any game or begin normal software updates at this time. The Wiikey will remain disabled, ensuring that the system won't lock up during standard game play or firmware upgrades.

      • 5

Reactivate the Wiikey by inserting and running the 1.9s config disc in your Wii. Once it has completed installation, hold down the "reset" key of the Wii and wait three minutes. Turn the Wii back on, and the Wiikey will again be active.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Removal of the Wiikey is possible for permanent deactivation, but will also cause damage to the internal Wii hardware.

    • The Wiikey is not supported by Nintendo, and any damage caused by the installation, removal or deactivation of the key is not covered by any warranty.
