Knowing how to clean an air-conditioner air filter is important. If the air filter is dirty and not cleaned as needed, the airflow becomes restricted and the unit will not cool the room the way it should. A dirty air filter on an air conditioner will also use more electricity while it operates with a dirty filter.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Water
  • Vacuum cleaner
  1. Step 1

Turn the air conditioner off if it is running. This process is used for a portable air conditioner and a central air-conditioning unit that has a reusable filter.

  2. Step 2

Open the front of the air conditioner and remove the foam filter in the front of the unit.

  3. Step 3

Vacuum the air filter to get as much dirt off as possible. Do not press hard on the filter.

  4. Step 4

Use a hose or place the air filter in the shower and rinse with water. Do one side and then flip it over to do the other side.

  5. Step 5

Place the filter somewhere to dry. This could take hours or even an entire day. Then replace the filter in the unit and close the front.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always check the air filter weekly to see if it is in need of cleaning.
  • Never scrub on the air filter--you might damage it.
