How to Self Publish With Adobe Acrobat

Adobe Acrobat is a program that creates PDF files (portable document format). PDF files can be read on any computer with the free Adobe Reader. This makes PDF files ideal for writers and artists who wish to self publish their work electronically. Adobe Acrobat allows you to open a variety of text and graphic files, and format them into ready-to-publish e-books complete with a hyperlinked table of contents.

Instructions

    • 1

Format your book in a word-processing program. Complete all of your formatting before you open the manuscript in Acrobat. You can do line edits in Acrobat, but the main purpose of the software is to generate a portable file that replicates the formatting you've completed in other software. Save your formatted manuscript as a rich text file for best results.

Download Adobe Acrobat. You can get a free 30-day trial at the Adobe Acrobat website (see Resources). Install and open the program. Choose "Create PDF" if you only have one document to turn into a PDF file. Decide whether or not you want to have thumbnails of the pages of your book displayed when the document is opened, and what zoom level you want the document to open with.

Use the link tool to select the chapter names of your book, then browse to the page you want the link to take you to. This will give you a hyperlinked table of contents so your readers don't have to cycle through all of your pages.

Add a cover to your book. Adobe Acrobat reads a variety of graphics format. To add a cover, simply combine pages and browse to the folder where your cover art is located. Acrobat will ask you where to insert the graphic. Indicate the position for your cover and Acrobat will combine it with your already-formatted manuscript.

Use Acrobat's editing tools to crop and size your book the way you want it to appear. You can also apply a password to your document that will require your customers to enter a password when the book is published.
