Tailgaters are not just annoying, and can put you in danger with their aggressive driving. Don't let tailgaters make you angry, as there are safe ways to get rid of them. Follow this advice to take charge, protect yourself and get rid of tailgaters before an accident happens.

Instructions

    • 1

Allow extra space in front of you and the next vehicle. This will give you extra slowing or stopping time to keep the tailgater from hitting you.

    • 2

Slow slightly so that you're traveling a little under the speed limit. This will encourage tailgaters to pass you because it makes it easier for them to get around you in less time. If they still don't pass, pull into a slower lane or to the side of the road.

    • 3

Pass and overtake the car in front of you to get away from tailgaters.

    • 4

Choose a car to follow you on long trips. If you overtake other cars, only get in front of cars you notice are leaving good gaps between themselves and the next car. Never get in front of cars that leave small gaps. Once you find a good car to be in front of, try to stay in front of it the whole trip, if you can.

    • 5

Get off the road and take a meal or shopping break. This will allow the tailgaters to get so far ahead that they won't bother you for the rest of the trip.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't try to make tailgaters angry by flashing your brake lights, slowing, accelerating or making it difficult for them to pass. This will only worsen the situation.
